Racing
The BDA, The British Dragon Boat Racing Association (which is
the governing body of dragon boat racing in the UK), organises a
series of one-day National League race events all over the UK.
The National League culminates in a separate two-day National
Cup end of season competition which is held at the Holme Pierrepont
National Watersports Centre here in Nottingham, usually around the
end of September.
The BDA National League is split into two divisions, Premier and
Standard. At the end of the 2010 racing season we finished second
in the Standard league and as a result have been promoted to the
Premier league for the 2011 racing season.
Each season, we attend between 7 and 10 National League race
events. The best 7 race results in the season count to determine
our final league position. For 2011 there is a slight change and it
will be your best 6 results out of a possible 7 that will count to
your final league position.
We can race over a number of different distances, but the most
popular are 200m and 500m. At the National Cup event we also race
over 1,000m. The National League events take place on a number of
different bodies of water. We race on rivers, lakes and saltwater
docks.
As well as racing over different distances, we also compete in
different classes. These classes determine the makeup of the crew
in the boat. Classes include Open (any combination of men and
women), Mixed (at least 8 ladies in the boat), Ladies only and
Junior.
Currently we compete in Open, Mixed and Ladies classes but we
are looking to redevelop a junior crew over the course of the next
couple of seasons, having had a successful junior crew in the
past.
