Notts Anaconda

Notts Anaconda Dragon Boat Club

Welcome to Notts Anaconda – meet people, get fit and have fun.

Notts Anaconda is the oldest dragon boat club in Nottingham. Based on Trentside near the City ground, we train together regularly and take part in races across the country.

Joining a dragon boat club is a superb way to get fit but it also comes with a great social life. We work hard but also have lots of fun with regular social events and a community that helps and supports each other.

What is dragon boat racing?

Dragon boat racing is an exciting team sport that involves a team of up to 20 paddlers who use a single bladed paddle to move the boat through the water.

Originating in China, dragon boat paddling traces its ancestry back over 2000 years.

Paddlers work together and keep in time while a helm steers the boat from the back and a drummer at the front beats a drum in time with the paddlers.

UK dragon boat competitions take place across the country with up to 6 boats in a single race competing to be the first across the finish line.

Only by working as a team can a crew be competitive, so dragon boat racing builds great team spirit and brings people of all ages and all walks of life together with one goal – winning that race!

Meet our crew

Dragon boat paddlers come in all shapes and sizes; there is no upper age limit or fitness requirement to join.
Here is a tongue-in-cheek intro to a few of our paddlers and a little bit about them:

Tall dark and handsome, Nick can often be found at the club looking fabulous. Nick also looks after this website and didn’t write this himself…

Neil is the UK dragon boat kingpin. Built like a mafia don but nowhere near as scary, Neil loves skiing, jagerbombs and espresso martinis.

A member of Notts Anaconda for a jillion years and the most organised person on the planet, Ali loves to explore the world. You might not see her in winter but she’s useful when she is here.

Taal came to us for a trial paddle and has been with us ever since. Taal is a great paddler whose hobbies include naps and not looking at her watch. Oh… don’t ask her about soup…

Everyone’s favourite who no-one is scared of at all, Alex is one of the oldest members of Notts Anaconda… did I say oldest? I meant longest serving… oh heck

Winner of the sexiest beard competition for the last two years, Seth is a great paddler who is very down to earth, quite literally… He’s actually really tall; he’s just far away.

Possibly the strongest man on earth, James loves to paddle when the sun is shining but gets a bit chilly in winter bless him. Known by his other names when running circuits classes – ‘The Punisher’ and ‘Agh Make it Stop’.

Supposedly German but I have never seen her drink beer from a massive stein and she hasn’t left a towel in the boat yet. A bit suspicious if you ask me but she’s good with a paddle so we let her off.

The boss man (or so he thinks), Ashley is the founder and chairman of Notts Anaconda. He’s not as old as his groans about what aches this week make him seem. Hobbies include tennis and arguing with officials on race day

A man of many talents, Stuart is going for the motivational speaker of the century award and practises his patter while helming…. honestly, we don’t know how to make him stop.
